MeteoIO has received contributions from various individuals since its start in 2008. Thomas Egger and Mathias Bavay implemented the very first version and kept on working on MeteoIO many years later. Moustapha Mbengue implemented the first database plugin (for IMIS stations), David Zanella worked on the first build and Continuous Integration toolchain that would later be fully overhauled by Benjamin Bürgisser years later. Thiemo Theile, Michael Reisecker and Patrick Leibersperger contributed some quite advanced algotithms and plugins while Nander Wever and Adrien Michel contributed over various parts of the code.

On the funding side, MeteoIO has mostly been self-funded by the SLF as well as "on the side" as a way to achieve the goals of other projects. It has therefore been indirectly and sometimes directly, funded or motivated by the following projects:

• our work in support of the SLF avalanche warning applications (as part of our mandate with the Snowpack snow cover model) has provided a strong motivation for the development of MeteoIO;
• a KTI (now Innosuisse) project in 2008-2009;
• the Swiss Multi-Science Computing Grid (SMSCG) project funded by AAI-Switch in 2008-2013 and in 2013-2013 for its SMSCG-2 follow-up project;
• the European Union Interreg project Interregionales Kriseninformationssystem (IRKIS) in 2007-2013;
• the European Union project Hydrosys (grant number 224416) in 2008-2011;
• the Swiss Multi-Science Computing Grid 2 (SMSCG2) follow-up project funded by AAI-Switch in 2013;
• the European Union Horizon2020 project ProSnow (grant number 730203) in 2017-2020;
• the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Data Access Made Easy (DAME) project in 2020 (agreement number 01061/2019-1.0 OBS);
• the Caritas and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation project Weather, water and climate services (WWCS) in 2021-2025;
